CC-- MT in Ontario, Canada

I just started working for a Canadian medical transcription company, where I am expected to transcribe a certain number of dictated minutes per week. I am nervous and second guess myself to the point where it hinders my productivity greatly. My question is, how do you gain the confidence to be a great medical transcriptionist? Are you slow at first? Is it wise to take the time, to be slow and research everything? Will speed come? I am dejected because I am only doing 4 to 6 minutes of dictation per hour. Should I be making lists of words, medications, phrases? Please give me some pointers about this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Don't worry, same thing happened to me
by: Char

I'm also a transcriptionist for a Canadian company, and when I started (with a bit of experience under my belt from several years prior) I was very nervous, second-guessing everything, and my productivity was low, very low! It seemed to take me 3 times as long to get my minimum as it should have.

I've been at it for 3 years (almost daily, since I've got 3 kids at home) and I'm producing almost 3 times the minimum now, and loving it! Do make a list of terms, medications, anything that sounds strange to you, and pretty soon you'll have a comprehensive list that you'll refer to often, and you'll even notice eventually you won't have to refer to it as often (I love seeing an entire paragraph of medications that aren't "red"!)

Don't worry, you'll get faster, more productive, and you'll enjoy it more soon enough!

Proficient medical transcribing
by: Sandra, site owner

Hi there, yes I used to second guess myself and I was slow, but now I'm a fast, confident transcriber. Yes definitely make a list of medical terms and do it alphabetically and eventually your list will be huge and you will refer to it often.

You are very slow at the moment, but importantly is the work you're submitting back to the client correct? If so, then you're doing well and you will become more confident as you know the terminology better and are more comfortable with the work. I used to check everything again, was scared when I started working with new client, but this all goes away and you will become fast and proficient soon.

Kind regards,
