Comparing Voice Recognition Software

Comparing voice recognition software will endeavour to give you ideas into this area, which by the way has come a long long way over the past years with breakthrough technology.

Voice recognition software, voice transcription software, voice recognition typing software, whatever you call it, is no longer super expensive and unreliable. I looked into this a while ago to save my fingers as I spend hours and hours a day typing and I am always afraid of RSI and arthritis and stuff like that.

So my computer guy recommended a great package to me at only a small cost really and I haven't looked back since. I actually have a version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and I love it. So voice recognition software allows you to talk to a computer, dictate to it and issue most commands that you would have otherwise needed the keyboard or mouse to perform.

Your computer is trained to recognise your speech as you dictate. You must have clear pronunciations of words as you dictate, otherwise the computer will type a different word altogether.

When comparing voice recognition software I came across older voice recognition softwares where you have to speak slowly and wait and speak again, but newer versions are designed to recognise continuous speech, so you can speak in a more natural and fluent way. I just talk away and off it goes, it's amazing.

Even with today's advances in technology, voice recognition software is still not 100% accurate however. For comparing voice recognition software you may wish to visit voice recognition software reviews.

Benefits of using voice recognition software

  • well it saves your fingers from typing all day, and

  • is great for those who are not fast typists. I type at 110wpm+ and if I am transcribing a document manually (ie: typing) or using my voice recognition software, I still get the document completed in the same amount of time, but my fingers are saved. So this is great for slower typists as it increases your work output.

    Be careful though...

Make sure you that when your children come charging in the room that you click your microphone off or tell it to switch off, otherwise their words will be typed on your screen. And if you don't pick this up you can send off a document to your client with this text on it.

    Advances in voice recognition software

Continuous speech voice recognition are programs designed to understand a more natural mode of speaking. And these days with advances in the science, continuous speech is also referred to as natural language recognition. This system prefers you to speak in sentences and not pause and it takes sentence context into account and the accuracy is better if you don't pause and just keep speaking.

    So is it worth it?

Well like I said voice recognition, even with the natural language recongition speaking software, is not 100% accurate. Some may feel it is more trouble to train software and correct mistakes than to simply use a keyboard. However in comparing voice recognition software, natural language recognition can recognise as much as 160 wpm (I have seen advertised) and it remembers your voice as you speak the words.

Other considerations when using voice recognition software is to factor in the speed of your processor, the quality of the microphone and the environment where you are talking, as these are crucial to the accuracy of this software. So good equipment and quiet please. When my son walks in if I don't ask the system to go to sleep it types his words in my client's work.

Requirements to have speech recognition software

  • you need a powerful computer and have a basic knowledge of computers for installation and operation of software.

  • you must be able to speak consistently and fluidly, which I find difficult when I'm tired.

  • you need to understand there will be a learning curve with the software and you may need to memorise function and commands, so be patient.

  • you need to realise that you will still need to correct some incorrect dictation. There will not be spelling errors as there are no spelling errors with voice recognition software, just misinterpreted words.

Who is leading the market then?

Nuance who created Dragon NaturallySpeaking seems to be the dominant player in the voice recognition software market from what I can see.
