starting out in medical transcription

by MM
(BC, Canada)

First I just want to say thank you for the website. I have found it very helpful. I am currently working towards my medical transcription certificate and although the courses may teach you the fundamentals, I now need to know how to put it all together. I have downloaded the Express Scribe as I would like to start out with digital transcription, and down the road to branch out with tapes if my clients require it. First I need a foot pedal, and in researching it looks like the Infinity foot pedal is compatible with quite a few programs. So is this one that you would recommend or use? I am also unsure of where and when to start applying for jobs. I have taken Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Disease, Medical Transcription level I, and Ethics and Confidentiality but I don't have any experience.

The advice I was given is to work at a Dr's office to get experience but that kind of defeats the purpose of me doing this from home. I know Mediquist has a test you can take but I am a little unsure if I am ready for it. I have been practicing on some of the links you have provided but I am unsure when it comes to formats and was told not to worry as everyone is different and the Dr would be giving you their format/template. Is this correct or is there a website that has templates I can download?

So is there anything you can recommend for a newbie that doesn't have experience in transcription just the courses? Any specific agencies that would look at your other qualifications? I am very eager to start my career in this field and any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi thanks for your questions. Do check out the NCH site, where you downloaded the free express scribe platform, as you can buy your footpedal from them and then you know it's compatible.

As far as applying for jobs, looks like you want work as a contractor from home. I list contractor from home medical transcription work on my /home_transcription_companies.html page. Lots of the transcription companies listed there outsource medical transcription to home based contractors. Yes you can start onsite too if you find such work to get experience under your belt too. This doesn't have to last forever, but may get you more confident in the field first. Look for onsite temp work I guess to gain a bit of experience that doesn't have to be full time.

As far as formatting, yes don't worry, most people you work with give you their templates or formats that they wish you to type in, so don't worry. Others can be straight letters.

Now some transcription companies will give you a go even though you have no transcription experience, but because you have the terminology knowledge. If you have good typing speed and the course under your belt you should be able to get a foot in the door. Some transcription companies give you a trial, etc.

Then you can also source your clients direct later on when you're more confident, instead of just working through a transcription company. It'll all come into place. I even got work for two dermatologists, with no experience in that area at all, but won the client because of my cheaper rates, which weren't that cheap, but obviously cheaper than others quoted. I worked for them for three years, so I was glad to gain those clients without medical terminology being my background at all.

It'll all come together, I too was nervous when I started out doing transcription for clients, but got confident with the technology and the work after a while. Now I'm virtually a full time transcriber, with some secretarial work for some clients. I love the transcription work.

kindest regards
