Starting a medical
transcription business

I'll just run through some considerations when starting a medical transcription business. Now the same can apply to a general or legal transcription business and some points are relevant for a virtual assistant business specialising in other areas.

To run a transcription business from home:

  • You've got to be disciplined to get the work done, no one is pushing you to do the work or stand behind you, it's all up to you. No work, no income.

  • Do you like typing? Do you mind sitting in your home office basically for hours and hours a day?

  • Working from home can be lonely, but you can have an online social network, VA networks, forums, etc.

  • Have your family's understanding that your work is a real business, husbands seem to have major trouble with this one and expect a clean house and food ready; that doesn't always happen.

  • Be prepared to always be learning new terminology in this job, amazing, my list of terminology grows weekly (and I only do one branch of medical transcription)

  • Obviously a great command of the English language, and some words change their spelling slightly, ie: American English or British English. So take care if you are working with an overseas client and make sure you know which English they wish you to use.

  • Be prepared to think for yourself, sometimes you are not able to ask questions and must transcribe what you feel is correct.
