by Lori

I am a medical transcriber but also an internet marketer. I know there is a need for transcribers out there and I want to start my own business online. What type of software do I need? I know how to market myself, I am just not sure how I would set up uploading audio files or private files etc?

thanks
Lori

Transcribing business - software needs, transferring audio
by: Sandra, site owner

Hi Lori thanks for your question on my site regarding what software needs you would need for digital transcription and uploading audio files.

I do answer such questions on my transcription section of the site. You really don't need to purchase software (transcription platforms) to transcribe digital files these days. I've for six years successfully used express scribe which is free (and there are other free platforms to use too). I have several pages on the site that link you to where you can download this and other free software. I only purchased a compatible foot pedal and quality earphones.

Now as far as uploading audio files, several of my clients, who are transcription companies or other companies that deal with audio files extensively, have their own websites set up where I can download the audio file straight from their website onto my hard drive and then I transfer that audio into express scribe ready for transcribing.

Another client has a digital voice recorder that also allows him to send the dictated audio straight to me via email and when I open the file it opens it straight in express scribe. This is set up on his end. His files are not very large and only quick dictations, so easily sent via email.

Other clients also use those file transfer websites (of which there are many such as www.sendthisfile.com) to transfer their large audio files to me. When a file is ready for me the relevant website emails me that there is a file ready for me and I download it onto my hard drive and then open up express scribe and load the audio into it ready for typing up. I've told several clients to use such websites to transfer files to me.

So there are many ways to get the audio to you as you can see. So I hope I've helped to answer your questions.

I also have great ebooks you can purchase on setting up your business too. So do have a good look around and you will find lots of valuable information.

Kindest regards,
Sandra, site owner.
PS. Your photo is beautiful.

How to start
by: Anonymous

Hi, I am in the research phase too. I did transcription in another lifetime using the Dictaphone. I also have a MT certificate from my local college but never did anything with that. It seems that the consensus is to go with escribe. Its free Also check out Amazon ETurk Casting Words.
I would Google keywords like transcription forums, anything you want to know about. That should get you started. Good luck!
