What is an independent contractor

What is an independent contractor?

An independent contractor is a natural person, business or corporation which provides goods or services to another entity under terms specified in a contract.

Unlike an employee, an independent contractor does not work regularly for an employer but works as and when required.

So to reiterate, an independent contractor is not an employee, you are self employed running your own business. This is a virtual assistant website and yes virtual assistants are independent contractors.

Your local tax department and independent contractors

Do check out with your local taxation department as to what they deem to be an independent contractor. Your accountant can also help you.

What I mean is that make sure that in your business you do not inadvertently become seen as an employee in the eyes of the tax department. It can be difficult when you are contracting your services out to clients, but you may only have two or even just one client, as this can be seen as an employer/employee relationship.

This would obviously have ramifications for both your business and your client's business.
